Brass for Life Uganda: Transforming Lives Through Music, Education, and Support
Who We Are
Brass for Life Uganda is a Community-Based Organization (CBO) dedicated to offering psychosocial and emergency support to war survivors, vulnerable children, and teenagers in Uganda. Through the transformative power of music, life skills training, and early childhood care and education (ECCE), we provide a foundation for healing, growth, and resilience.
Located in Kiryandongo District—a region home to many refugee settlements and vulnerable communities—our work focuses on empowering those who have endured the trauma of war and displacement. By integrating psychosocial support, education, and nutrition into our programs, we aim to nurture well-rounded, emotionally resilient individuals capable of thriving despite their challenging circumstances.
The State of Early Childhood Education in Uganda : Uganda’s Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) system faces significant hurdles:
Limited Access: Over 75% of rural children do not have access to pre-primary education, leaving them ill-prepared for formal schooling.
Underfunding: Many ECCE programs lack adequate funding for infrastructure, teaching materials, and professional development for educators.

Teacher Shortages: A lack of trained ECCE teachers results in substandard learning environments.
Gender Disparities: Girls in rural areas are often at a higher risk of missing out on early education due to cultural practices, poverty, and household responsibilities.
Early Childhood Care and Education in Uganda
Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) in Uganda faces significant challenges, particularly in rural areas like Kiryandongo District:
- Access Disparities: Many children lack access to structured pre-primary education, leaving them unprepared for primary school.
- Underfunding: Inadequate infrastructure, learning materials, and trained educators hinder the effectiveness of ECCE programs.
- Psychosocial Needs: Vulnerable children, including war survivors, often require additional emotional and psychological support to succeed academically.
In Kiryandongo, these issues are further exacerbated by the high number of refugee families and the economic hardships they face.
Our Programs
At Brass for Life Uganda, we address these challenges holistically, ensuring every child has the opportunity to grow, learn, and heal.
- Psychosocial Support Through Music:
Music serves as a therapeutic tool to help children and teenagers process trauma and build confidence.
Our brass band programs create safe spaces for self-expression and community building.
- Life Skills Training:
We equip youth with practical skills such as leadership, teamwork, and resilience to navigate life’s challenges effectively.
- Early Childhood Care and Education:
Access: Establishing safe, inclusive learning centers equipped with age-appropriate resources.
Quality Education: Training ECCE teachers to provide trauma-informed education tailored to the needs of vulnerable children.
Community Engagement: Educating parents on the importance of early learning and providing resources to support their children’s development at home.

- Emergency Support: Providing immediate relief to families in crisis, including food, shelter, and counseling services.
Nutrition: A Cornerstone of Child Development
Proper nutrition is essential for cognitive, emotional, and physical development, especially during early childhood. However, malnutrition remains a pervasive issue in Kiryandongo District:
- High Malnutrition Rates: Refugee settlements often experience food shortages, leading to stunted growth and developmental delays in children.
- Limited Knowledge: Many families lack awareness of the importance of balanced diets and how to achieve them with locally available resources.
Our Nutrition Initiatives:
- School Feeding Programs:
Providing daily meals to children in our ECCE centers to ensure they have the energy to learn and grow.
Partnering with local farmers to source fresh, nutritious food, boosting the local economy.
- Nutritional Education: Training caregivers on meal planning, food preservation, and hygiene practices to prevent malnutrition and disease.
- Community Gardens: Establishing gardens to grow nutrient-rich crops like beans, maize, and vegetables, providing sustainable food sources for families.
